Mumbai: A 1.5-year-old girl suffering from a rare congenital diaphragmatic hernia has undergone a successful surgery at Narayana Health Children’s Hospital in Mumbai.

The child had been experiencing severe respiratory issues and required constant oxygen support. A previous surgical attempt in a smaller town had failed to resolve the condition, prompting her transfer to Mumbai in a critical state.

Upon evaluation, a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including paediatric surgeons and critical care experts led by Dr. Rasik Shah, opted for a second surgical intervention.

Investigations revealed that due to the severity of the hernia, the liver had moved into the chest cavity, impairing lung function.

The surgical team at Narayana Health Children’s Hospital performed the correction using a thoraco-abdominal approach, carefully repairing the hernia and restoring the liver to its natural abdominal position.

Post-surgery, the patient showed significant improvement. She was off ventilator support within three days, and after two weeks of hospital care, she was discharged. Follow-up monitoring over the next 45 days showed that the child gained 600 grams in weight, and her overall health has stabilised.
